Wearing a uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student. Claire Howlette, an English teacher, agrees: My school is one of many that seem to be reverting to a more formal uniform — this September I will be wearing a shirt and blazer instead of my old jumper and polo shirt. A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. Some people believe that a school uniform can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents. In America, where a majority of schools do not have a uniform, roughly , children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. A strict uniform gives the impression that rules are strict too, perhaps helping maintain a sense of order at school. Although wearing a school uniform is less expensive than buying a whole wardrobe of outfits, uniform can still be pricey. Recently the Liberal Democrats held a conference about the cost of school uniforms across England. The education minister David Laws is to issue new guidance to end the practice of using a single uniform supplier, enabling parents to shop around for uniform. If schools decide to change their uniform, for example with a new emblem or colour, changes should be restricted to one or two items, preferably with sew-on logos. Changing from a one-supplier system could help families with the cost of school uniform. Although it might seem a shame to miss out on those two years...

While some schools have decided to make uniforms compulsory, some have given the students the liberty to dress as per their liking. The following sections present the pros and cons for wearing uniforms to school. Reduces Conflicts and Insecurities. First of all, having a standard dress code for students reduces social conflicts in schools. Students who are unable to follow the latest fashion trends might be bullied or looked down upon by the ones who follow the latest trends. Such a situation can impact their psyche in the long run. They might feel insecure. Such conflicts can be avoided if the students dress up in uniforms. Curbs Violence and Instills Loyalty. Such groups often target students who may belong to certain socioeconomic groups. All this will reduce considerably, if students wear school uniforms and identify themselves as "one". It is believed that wearing uniforms creates a sense of community, and a feeling of loyalty amongst the students for their school. A standard dress code is also advantageous for the parents. Parents have to spend only on the school uniform, which does not cost much. If there's no dress code, most students would insist on wearing fashionable clothes, for which the parents would have to shell out a lot of money. From the education point of view, sociologists argue that when students are allowed to wear clothes of their own choice, they are likely to spend more time on clothes than studies. This can have a negative impact on their education and their grades can fall. So, making uniforms compulsory can help in creating a better learning environment. Prepares for...

While some kids and parents believe students should be free to dress the way they want as an expression of free speech, most schools have a say in how students dress. The school might have a dress code that gives guidelines for appropriate clothing, or it might require students to wear uniforms. Schools with a uniform policy usually have good reasons for implementing it, and some cite research to back their guidelines. Uniforms vary widely by school. Some are quite formal, requiring dress shirts and ties for boys and jumpers or dresses for girls. Others are little more than a sweat shirt emblazoned with the school's logo. Some schools offer a wide range of options and colors for uniforms, such as khaki or navy dress slacks that are found at most department stores. Other schools require that the students purchase clothing from an official school store or uniform supplier. It's not just private schools that require uniforms, either: Many public schools also require them, from kindergarten through grade A safe, encouraging school environment is a much better place to learn than a school full of conflict and discipline problems. Proponents believe school uniforms can help make the school environment more student friendly. School uniforms level the playing field. When all students have to wear the same thing, none of them can brag about wearing the latest, most expensive fashions. Whether they're from the upper, middle or lower class, all students dress the same. School uniforms can also increase student safety. Students cannot wear gang-affiliated clothing or colors: Individual style, in this case, is sacrificed for a safer learning environment. Even something as simple as a teacher being easily able to spot her students on a field trip -- or spot an intruder in the school -- is an important...
