Available from a different departure point. Fly to Istanbul, meet your tour manager and transfer to the hotel for a three-night stay. Dependent upon your time of arrival, acquaint yourself with your surroundings. Enjoy your first evening in an extraordinary city that bridges the divide between Europe and Asia, marked by the narrow strait of the Bosphorus, which brims with reminders of its illustrious past. Your tour includes entrance to the Topkapi, with its outer courtyard and gateways into its labyrinthine inner quarters. Later, perhaps cross the Golden Horn for a glimpse of modern Istanbul and, time permitting, to enjoy the sweeping views of the Bosphorus Strait. Another unforgettable day sees you return to the Historic Peninsula to explore the contrasting Ephesus escorted tours of the remarkable Blue Mosque and the monumental Aya Sofya church. The rest of the afternoon is free. Why not take an optional cruise along the Bosphorus River? Spend your last evening in this fascinating, glorious city, perhaps dining al fresco. Known for its darkest hour inthis is where the Allied forces suffered catastrophic losses, including some 10, members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - the famous ANZACs - at the hands of the defenders of the Ottoman Empire. Enjoy a first day amongst the wonders of classical Greece, as you explore the nearby ruins of Troy, guarded by a replica giant wooden horse recalling the tale of the first Trojan War. Begin your stay with dinner on the shores of the Aegean Sea. Spend today at leisure, enjoying the many facilities of the resort, strolling along the harbour promenade, discovering the medieval Kale district, or visiting tiny Pigeon Island. Alternatively, join the optional excursion to the geological wonder of Pamukkale, where white calcium deposits, some metres high, shape a slow moving, ever-changing...

I spent a day and half at Selcuk primarily to visit Ephesus. I arrived in Selcuk at midday the day before so went out to Ephesus myself. Thus I had the interesting opportunity of being able to compare a self guided tour and a guided tour. Self guided was infinitely better. In addition the guided tour was at an elementary level and the site provides interpretative signage which was just as good as the guide. With the exception of the House of Mary the other attraction on the guided tour the Temple of Artemis is walking distance from Selcuk as is St John's Basilica which was not part of the tour but is well worth visiting. The tour included a very poor quality lunch overcooked mush which had been in a bain marie all day and unwanted stops at two shops. If you stay in Selcuk self- guiding at Ephesus is the best option. The site is only a short taxi-drive and can also be accessed by mini-bus for a few lira. About Ephesus is a great company to work with. We were able to make our arrangements well in advance. Our guide and driver were experienced and our minibus was comfortable. We did their full day tour to Ephesus including the terrace houses and Sirince village. We did not enjoy Sirince Village- it is simply a shopping stop and not worth the time. This was our request however, not the tour company's. Travelers should be aware that lunch is at a place where they will explain how carpets are made and then show you a variety of carpets from around Turkey. There really is no pressure to buy and the demonstration is quite interesting- I just would have preferred to know in advance. Our private tour of Ephesus was...

High-class jewellery and fashion shops jostle with hawkers selling freshly prepared food, shoe-shine boys and the largest covered bazaar in the world. During its 3, years of turbulent history, it has been home to the Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans and, finally, the Turks themselves — all leaving their mark. We are taught the Roman Empire fell in AD when Attila the Hun sacked Rome, but rarely told is that the eastern and wealthier half lasted another thousand years. This lead to some amazingly preserved monuments, with perhaps the greatest legacy being the 6th-century Hagia Sophia, the largest ever church and for over a thousand years, the largest covered space on earth. During the Middle Ages, the Ottoman Empire built another range of monuments to match, including the amazing Topkapi Palace, which was the seat of government of arguably the greatest empire of the medieval age. We also visit three of the most famous ancient sites in the country: Troy, Pergamon and Ephesus. Each is very different, with Troy being the oldest, dating from BC, and during more than a century of excavations, nine separate cities have been unearthed, all built over each other. During Roman times, the greatest city in the eastern Mediterranean was Ephesus, which boasts an extraordinary number of superbly preserved monuments, including the stunning two-storey Library of Celsus. For many, this is the Pompeii of the East. Turkish cuisine is an interesting blend of Mediterranean specialities: Turkey is the perfect place if you are looking for something a little different and it will not disappoint. It possesses a genuinely unique blend of diverse cultures, centuries of history and an atmosphere that links the mysterious east with the familiar west.
