Dick Francis, who has died aged 89, was a unique figure, a champion steeplechase jockey who, without any previous apparent literary bent, became an international bestselling writer, the author of 42 crime novels, selling more than 60m copies in 35 languages. Right from the start, with Dead Cert in , the Dick Francis thriller showed a mastery of lean, witty genre prose reminiscent — sometimes to the point of comic parody — of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. It was an American style that many clever people in England had attempted to reproduce without much success, and it was a wonder how a barely educated former jump jockey was able to do the trick with such effortless ease. People said his highly educated wife wrote the books for him. It was a mystery that was never satisfactorily solved. The most dramatic incident in his racing career was also a mystery. In the Grand National at Aintree in , his mount Devon Loch, the Queen Mother's horse trained by Peter Cazalet, had jumped all the fences and, well ahead, only 50 yards from the finish, without another horse near him, suddenly collapsed and was unable to continue. Some said the horse had attempted to jump an imaginary fence; another theory, put up years later by Bill Braddon, Cazalet's head lad, was that the girth was too tight and the horse suddenly let loose an enormous fart. Braddon said he had tightened the girth just before the off, "one notch up and another for luck", without realising that Cazalet had already done it in the saddling enclosure. There was no question of Francis, like a crooked jockey out of one of his own books, having pulled the horse. It had been his great dream since he was a lad of eight in...

After wartime service in the RAF, Francis became a full-time jump-jockey, winning over races and becoming champion jockey of the British National Hunt. He came to further prominence in as jockey to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother , riding her horse Devon Loch when it fell, for unexplained reasons, while close to winning the Grand National. He then retired from the turf and became a journalist and novelist. All his novels deal with crime in the horse-racing world, some of the criminals being outwardly respectable figures. The stories are narrated by one of the key players, often a jockey, but sometimes a trainer, an owner, a bookie, or someone in a different profession, peripherally linked to racing. This person is always facing great obstacles, often including physical injury, from which he must fight back with determination. The most frequently recurring of Francis' protagonists was former jockey turned one armed private investigator Sid Halley. More than forty of these novels became international best-sellers. Francis was born in Coedcanlas , Pembrokeshire , Wales. He was the son of a jockey and stable manager [9] and he grew up in Berkshire , England. In most interviews, they commented that it was love at first sight. Francis has some of his characters fall similarly in love within moments of meeting, as in the novels Flying Finish , Knockdown , and The Edge. Their families were not entirely happy with their engagement, but Dick and Mary were married in June in London. She had earned a degree in English and French from London University at the age of 19, was an assistant stage manager, and later worked as a publisher's reader. She also became a pilot, and her experience of flying contributed to many novels, including Flying Finish , Rat Race , and Second Wind....

Hi there You might find the information on http: Either way, have fun, Linda Corby. Saturday, July 31, My obsession with Dick Francis. Dick Francis is a genius. Seriously, if I could write a series of books this compelling, I would die happy. I love first-person novels, and these are ridiculously appealing. In seventh grade, when DF was touring the U. Whatever the allocation of authorship, the books are really unmatched, I think, in what they do so well: BTW my friend Emily W. However, since I have already read all of his novels a million times, there is clearly nothing to stop me from reading them again and again. So now for a show of true obsessiveness… The great classic DF novels, pretty much unbeatable these heros get beaten up left and right, and the language describing their pain is entrancingly lowkey…--the first two here are both spectacular, leading up to the geniusy Odds Against , and the last two not quite as good but still very enjoyable: Because the problem with these later ones is that the narrators, while reasonably appealing, no longer give you that great sense of being realistic, psychologically appealing characters very much the product of the circumstances in which they were raised. This relates to my pet peeve, about not having a series detective age as years go by. Posted by Jenny Davidson at 7: Newer Post Older Post Home. Following the death of his father last year, Felix Francis, 58, has picked up the literary reins and has just released his first novel as sole author with another two scheduled for Mr Francis said he was looking forward to the book festival, adding: The former physics teacher is now working full time on the novels as well as running the Dick Francis archive and the family business. But it is what comes naturally and I feel the early books are as much part of me as him really — I have grown up with them, I know them so well. Mr Francis, who lives near Banbury in Oxfordshire, said his mother had always helped his father write the novels so it was really "a family business". The writer said the first Dick Francis novel came out when he was eight and he then grew up in "the most fantastic fiction factory" of the 20th century. In the father and son team released Dead Heat, their first jointly authored novel, followed by the London and New York Times bestsellers Silks in , Even Money in and Crossfire in The latter will be published by Penguin in paperback in July and this was the book that they were both working on when the racing legend died last February.
